In Ribeira, one of the oldest and most typical sites of Oporto city, made UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996, are worth mentioning the Praça da Ribeira, popularly known as Cube Square, Rua da Fonte Taurina, one of the oldest in the city, Wall of Bacalhoeiros and Infante House, where it is believed to have born Infante D. Henrique, in 1394. This area of Oporto was also where one of the most charismatic figures of the city lived (between 1902 and 1996) – the Duke of Ribeira, known to have saved several people to die drowned.
In the vicinity guests will also find, at a few minutes walking distance, the Church of S. Francisco – one of the main buildings in the Gothic style, begun in the fourteenth century – , the Palácio da Bolsa, the Church and Tower of the Clerigos and the famous bookstore Lello & Irmão, named by Time magazine as one of the 15 “coolest” bookstores to visit. Across the river in Vila Nova de Gaia, the Port Wine cellars offer guided tours and wine tastings , framed in an idyllic landscape with views of the magnificent Oporto city.
